Top 3 steps for athlete safety

You have a responsibility to protect athlete safety. Whether you are a coach, administrator, parent, or athlete. You should be asking questions and having influence where you can.

There are three top steps all teams should have to physically protect athletes.

  1. Proper medical staff

  2. An emergency action plan

  3. Access to necessary equipment and support

These top three stpes are the basis for athlete safety. Until you have these, the rest is simply extra.

Proper medical staff should always include a certified athletic trainer. They would be on-site for practices and games at a minimum.

Emergency action plans should exist for every venue and should be practiced regularly.

Medical staff, coaches, and athletes should have access to emergency medical equipment. This includes a first aid kit and automatic external difibulator (AED).

These are the top three. For more suggestions, visit my e-book Your Guide to Team Expectations for Athlete Health and Safety.
